Song & Verse: ALL OF ME by John Legend

2013-09-24-08-43-10-1947824572Recently, I heard John Legend sing his new single, All of Me, live on David Letterman. The song took me away. A beautiful and emotionally eloquent expression of love. I rewound my TV twice to hear the song again and again. I haven’t bought popular music in years – at least I can’t remember the last time I bought a pop or R&B CD. A few days after hearing that song, just after ordering my coffee, I noticed John Legend’s CD, Love in the Future, for sale on the counter. Sold.

I think what strikes me most about this song is hearing how far he’s come as a singer/songwriter expressing his maleness and his attitude regarding relationships. As he has evolved emotionally, his music has as well. His first CD was pretty much about how he couldn’t commit. How he didn’t want to be tied down. And how love was just this casual temporary thing people partake of for fun.

I skipped his next couple of CD’s… but a couple of years ago, I heard This Time from his CD titled Evolved. It was played during the then-series finale of The Game. My ears perked, eager to hear something good.

Video: This Time by John Legend

I’m posting within an hour of hearing this song – it was so powerful to me.

I’m trying to get up and clean, but in the middle of my quiet, slow Saturday, I start surfing channels and stopped on BET to watch their showing of back-to-backs of “The Game,” a TV series about a fictional football team and some of the relationships a few of the players were involved in. I’ve seen the show a few times over the years, but today I landed on the last three episodes of the series, which aired last year. The last fifteen minutes of the last episode had me sobbing ridiculously and perhaps I cried for fifteen minutes after the show went off – during which time, I rewound my TV to replay the last ten minutes. Then I went to YouTube to find the song that turned me into a water fountain. {I’m posting the video that features photos of the actors in The Game.}

After numerous replays of This Time by John Legend, I noticed on the sidebar that one of the main characters of The Game, Tia Mowry (Melanie in the show) was featured in videos titled Tia and Cory’s wedding. I clicked on a couple and realized that Tia Mowry married her real-life love a year before the show finale. But what continued to choke me up was the song accompanying one of her videos – Jesus is Love by the Commodores. It was almost like God Himself reached out to console me during my outpouring….
