  • Jacob, Leah, Rachel (Genesis 29-31, 34-35)

Part 2:

  • Abram/Abraham & Sarai/Sarah (Genesis 12-13, 15-18, 20-22)
  • Hosea & Gomer (Book of Hosea)

  • Manoah & His Wife (Judges 13)

Part 5:

  • Elizabeth and Zechariah (Luke 1)
  • Mary and Joseph (Matthew 1, Luke 1-3)

Part 5 Themes

  • Spiritual pregnancy and purpose
  • Favor
  • Lineage
  • Identity

Study Questions

  • How is faith represented in these stories?
  • What errors do the righteous make in the presence of God or with His messengers?
  • Disbelief is shared between genders as is immediate faith. Was Zechariah punished or given an opportunity? Why do you think he was sentenced to silenced for his question and Mary wasn’t? For that matter, neither were Abraham and Sarah. Why does Zechariah stand out in his disbelief?
  • How are the prayers and prophesies of Hannah, Mary/Elizabeth and Zechariah similar?
  • What correlations do you see within the stories we’ve reviewed (re: couples, friends, family, community, relationship with God)?
  • The following women are not given origins in their narratives: Sarai, Manoah’s wife, Mary. What do you read into this or take away from it?
  • What is the role or importance of barrenness, children and adoption in the stories?
  • How does travel impact Mary and Elizabeth in their stories? What role does travel play in the other stories?
  • What are the similarities between the conception, pregnancies, instructions for and lives of Samson, Samuel, John and Jesus?
  • Where is God in the relationship and story?

The discussion for Part 5 will be on Saturday, December 19, 2020 at 8:00am MT. All are welcome to join. Email BibleStudy@Harvest-Life.org for link.

Sermon: Favor Over Fear by Steven Furtick

This sermon is a gift.

For me, it encompasses two big projects I’m working on: a re-edit of my book, Desert of Solitude: Refreshed by Grace and the Marriage & Relationship: Modern Concepts vs. Biblical Principles Virtual Bible Study Series.

I’ve added so much to Desert of Solitude since it was published in 2018, that it’s more of a re-write at this point. One of the strongest themes in my book is the cycle of endings and beginnings aka life and death. This sermon has touched on a vein and exposed perspectives I hadn’t considered. It is also a great addition to the Marriage & Relationship discussion series. Pastor Steven Furtick gives an excellent perspective and understanding of Jacob, Rachel and Leah (covered in Part 1 of my study) and Mary (covered in Part 5).

“The relationship between fear and favor cannot be overstated. Choose favor over fear.” ~ Pastor Steven Furtick

Video MR3.4: Partnership of Different Strengths

This portion of the discussion explores the concept of partnership of different strengths. Is the last part of our #Zoom discussion on Adam/Adamah and Chavah/Eve in Part 3 of Marriage & Relationship: Modern Concepts vs. Biblical Principles. All told, we were on the line for about four hours and touched on many topics and themes. It’s been quite the learning exercise editing long videos down to shorter conversational pieces.

Partnership of Different Strengths

The next discussion on Elizabeth/Zechariah and Mary/Joseph (MR Part 5) is tentatively planned for Saturday, December 19, 9:00am Mountain Time. I’m aiming to keep it under 1.5 hrs. 😉 Email BibleStudy@harvest-life.org for link details.

Video MR2.0: Marriage & Relationship Series Intro

This first video for the Marriage & Relationship: Modern Concepts vs. Biblical Principles series is an introduction of me (LaShawnda), my company and the study series. I also begin to explore the importance of naming. Each meeting is focused on one or two Biblical couples. We explore the main theme, elements, issues and lessons of their marriage and dominant relationships. For the longer discussions, the videos will be cut up into parts. Video Part 2.1 is a larger discussion of Abraham/Sarah and Hosea/Gomer. The proposed discussion questions for these couples are posted in Discussion Questions: Marriage & Relationship, Part 2 .

Video MR 3.1: Prelude: Womanhood Juxtaposed with The Crown on Netflix

“Who do you think you are? The Queen of England?”

Have you ever wondered who Elizabeth II, the Queen of England thinks she is? This first part of our third Marriage & Relationship study discussion explores the roles of women within a discussion of The Crown on Netflix.

The last two #Zoom discussions were recorded and I’m working to get them posted to this blog. As I review them for editing, I’m convinced this series should have been titled “Bible Conversations with Friends” or something similar. The faceless voice you hear in this video is my long-time friend, Dorina. When Dorina and I met over thirteen years ago in a corporate office in New York City, she didn’t identify herself as a believer and I had just begun my intentional faith walk and Bible learning.

Over the years, I’ve ascended and descended on the waves of life. There were some points when Dorina considered herself an ashiest or agnostic but would still engage in conversations about my faith journey. Four years ago, she began her own intentional faith walk and has been most interested in discussing marriage and divorce, ergo the title of this series. I’m truly glad to be able to share some of our great conversations with you all! Even better, you’re welcome to join us! Email for up-to-date details.

You can watch Part 3.1 of the discussion on Adam & Eve here:

  • Which role(s) do you focus on daily or regularly?

Discussion Questions: Marriage & Relationship, Part 3

Join me Tuesday, November 17, 2020 for Part 3 of the Marriage & Relationship: Modern Conflicts vs. Biblical Principles virtual study. We will explore the marriage of Adam/Adamah & Chavah/Eve and the relationship between Man/Woman and Human/Spirit.

Text: Genesis 1-5, Revelation 22

Discussion Questions

  • What are your ideas of manhood and womanhood?
  • When you think of two people joining in marriage, what does that represent to you?
  • Do you see husband and wife as an equal partnership or as an hierarchal relationship?
  • What is your interpretation of the following verses?
    • The Lord God took the man and put him in the garden of Eden to till it and keep it. And the Lord God commanded the man, “You may freely eat of every tree of the garden; but of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil you shall not eat, for in the day that you eat of it you shall die.” (Gen 2:15-17)
    • Then the Lord God said, “It is not good that the man should be alone; I will make him a helper as his partner.” (Gen 2:18)
    • Then the man said, “This at last is bone of my bones and flesh of my flesh; this one shall be called Woman, for out of Man this one was taken.” (Gen 2:23)
    • Therefore a man leaves his father and his mother and clings to his wife, and they become one flesh. (Gen 2:24)
    • And the man and his wife were both naked, and were not ashamed. (Gen 2:25)
    • “I will greatly increase your pangs in childbearing; in pain you shall bring forth children, yet your desire shall be for your husband, and he shall rule over you.” (Gen 3:16)
    • cursed is the ground because of you; in toil you shall eat of it all the days of your life; thorns and thistles it shall bring forth for you; and you shall eat the plants of the field. By the sweat of your face you shall eat bread until you return to the ground, for out of it you were taken; you are dust, and to dust you shall return.” (Gen 3:17-19)

Questions from Study Partners

Dorina:

  • What’s the situation with a believer marrying a non believer?
