My Biggest Frustration

‘For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife, and the two will become one flesh.’ So they are no longer two, but one flesh. Therefore what God has joined together, let no one separate.” Mark 10:7-9 NIV

You, my dear
Are annoying
You’re vexing and dealing with you
Is exhausting work
Indeed, you’re my biggest frustration

Yet, thoughts of you propel me
Your smile energizes me
My spirit answers your voice
Indeed, one true word from you
Increases me immeasurably
As it should be, your embrace is home

Perspective is lost in the midst of battle
Even with shared objectives
Why must we be at odds
You fight for the upper hand
I respond in kind hoping
To simply hold your hand
Power and struggle
Who’s in control
I’m so willing to let God be
I am surrendered
Why won’t you join me

You follow Him, I follow you
In step, in tune – as it should be
One strays away; we both fall into discord
Communicating on conflicting frequencies
Blind to one another’s needs
Deaf to each other’s cries
Hurting too much
To offer reconciliation
Or focus on reparation
We can do what no other can –
We can create the wedge that’ll separate us.

You’re my biggest encouragement, my dear man
Yes, you’re the ailment.
But you’re also the cure.
Your presence is the balm that soothes –
An extension of God’s grace when you choose
To model Him
Frustration by definition is falling short of what is
And we keep falling short of us
Who we are together

Join, unite, become
Fight, resist, oppose

Love, repent, forgive
Overlook, undervalue

Join, unite, become
Fight, resist, oppose

Love, repent, forgive
Overlook, undervalue

On and on and on and on…

We can choose to…
Fight this joining we can’t control
Resist this blessed union
Stay opposed to the process of becoming
More together

Or, we can choose to…
Surrender to love
Surrender to repentance
Surrender to forgiveness
Continually accept each other

Yes, exhausting work
But so incredibly worthwhile
My dear, dear man
